January 2012
Sailors, Junior Sailors, Friends, Parents, and Grandparents,
Summer is coming and we are getting ready for the new sailing season. For
your planning purposes we have set the above schedule for the 2012 Deep
Creek Sailing School program.
The regular sailing weeks will run from Monday through Friday starting each
day at 9:30 AM
and ending at 4:00 PM. These sailing weeks are group lessons which will be held at
the Deep Creek Lake Sailing Association (Turkey Neck Yacht Club, 204 Yacht Club
Road) and are open to everyone. The
school does not discriminate. During adult weeks, on the water lessons will
be geared to each student's ability. We know that families are limited to
certain dates, and we will no longer have separate weeks for beginners and
more advanced juniors, but will divide the children into two groups by
ability and experience each week. The exception will be the week of July
16th. Requirements for this week are, (1) attending our sailing school
previously and (2) having passed the Red Laser Level. Enrollment for this
week will be limited by age, experience, and the number of Lasers we have
available. Students are encouraged to bring their own Laser when possible.
Adult Weeks: We will cover beginning sailing for participants without
experience, or those with very little experience. Capsize demonstrations
will be included. More experienced sailors will learn the use of the
spinnaker and the basics of sailboat racing. If you own a Flying Scot we
encourage you to use it for the sailing week; if you do not, we will provide
boats. We encourage couples to sign up but welcome singles too. Sometimes,
mom, pop, and older children sign up together.
Junior Weeks: These weeks are for youngsters of all ages and experience.
New/smaller kids will sail Optimist Prams; more experienced/bigger kids will
sail Lasers with our shorter rig. The week will start with capsize drill,
rigging and derigging, continue through on-the-water instruction,
knot-tying, and progress to racing for the more advanced sailors, free
sails and, group "cruises" and cruising picnics for everyone. We have a
minimum ages limitation of 8 for the junior programs. All juniors must be
swimmers. We will test this by having the junior sailors swim 50 yards and
stay afloat, in place, for 5 minutes. All junior sailors must wear life
jackets at all times on or near the water. Parents must execute a medical
release form which is included below. All participants will need to bring a
bag lunch and everyone needs to wear some kind of sailing, tennis, or closed
toe swim shoes. SInce it can be quite cool at Deep Creek even in summer, we
suggest that all participants have a dry clothing change along. Don't forget
sun screen.
Teen/Laser Week: Enrollment for this week will be
limited by age, experience, and the number of Lasers we have available.
Students are encouraged to bring their own Laser when possible. We have
twelve used Lasers available for this season.
Certified instructors, Josh Bullock, Jessica and Justin Burnam, Scot Parry, Gary Schubert, Isaac Vance, and Head Instructor, Ryan Schubert,
have agreed to return. Dave Bertsch, Dave Mahan, David Tuel, and Frank Wolfe
are available certified instructors as needed. There will be at least one
intern available each week.
These sailing courses are aimed at providing a fun experience for the
participants. Children who have gone through earlier courses have had a good
time, made new friends, and learned to sail. All youngsters will receive a
Sailing School cap and an award at the end of the week. Skill badges will be
awarded to those who earn them. Tee shirts and extra caps will be available
for purchase.
Each junior sailing week will have a maximum of 16 sailors. The adult week
class size will depend on the number of sailboats brought by the students
and the distribution of experience in the class. The school has three Flying
Scot available. If you have a specific week in mind get your application
with tuition check to us as soon as possible. If you are registering more
than one junior sailor or have friends who want to register, just make
additional copies of the application form and medical form downloaded from
below. Please submit a separate form for each junior. We are also requesting
medical forms for adults. Adults will also have a swim test, similar to the
one for children.
The tuition rate for the Junior and Teen Laser weeks will be $275 per student per
week. Students bringing their own Flying Scot, Laser, or Optimist Pram to
the school get a $50 per boat discount. The tuition for the Adult weeks will
be $300. We will provide private lessons, weekdays only, at $175 per day
or $115 for half day. We have Start Sailing Right, a beginning text from US
Sailing, available to all students at $15 per copy.
We will begin accepting telephone reservations March 20, 2012. You will only
be allowed to select one week until May 1st when you will be allowed to
select additional weeks as space is available. We will hold telephone
reservations for a maximum of two weeks without payment. Our spring mailing
will go out in March. If you need extra forms, they can be downloaded from
the links below. Be advised that last summer some junior weeks were full by
mid-May.
Use of School Boats: We are not renting boats this year.
Wednesday Evening Racing:
Wednesday evening races sponsored by the Deep Creek Yacht Racing
Association, and run by the Sailing School
beginning June 22 go through August 31. The short race or races will start at
5pm, prior to the regular club pitch-in and will be conducted in front of
theTurkey Neck club. They will be free and are offered to club or DCYRA
members and registered students. Students may use school boats.
Kids in Scots: The DCYRA (weekend race committee at DCL) realized that since
the Master's fleet only sails the first race on Saturday, a lot of Flying
Scots are available later in the afternoon. There will be a program on
Saturday afternoons during July and August for juniors to sail with parents
or older teens to race together while the second race is happening.
Weekend Racing for Juniors: Volunteers are working on plans for several
weekends of racing in both radial and 4.7 rig Lasers and Optimist Prams.
Details are not yet available.
Sincerely,
David Tuel, President,
